Eliminate financial obstacles for EEO complaints trending idea

Disabled employees who experience discrimination in the workplace (e.g., denial of reasonable accommodations) generally need to hire an attorney in order to pursue an EEO complaint. An employee's ability to pay for an attorney can therefore determine whether they are able to successfully file and win a discrimination case. Making any part of the EEO process accessible only to those with sufficient financial means promotes... more »

Promote the Programs trending idea

From what I've noticed when trying reach employers in my community about the vocational rehabilitation programs we offer, there seems to be some hesitancy, I believe some of this is due to low visibility of the program. I feel if there was some official literature, directed at employers this may ease their minds and make them more receptive to work with us. That way they would have something to refer to and not be reliant... more »

Disability Inclusion Training trending idea

An instructor-led disability inclusion training is an effective way to encourage employer support, and it will help educate and increase their awareness around race and disability discrimination. Our nonprofit 501(c)3 organization specializes in this area, providing disability inclusion training and consulting to employers. Please visit www.JFMconsulting.org for more information.

Create more incentives for companies to not terminate disable

Currently it is almost too easy for companies to let go of those who have mental, emotional, or combo disabilities. There are too many states that have AT WILL employment, and have the leverage of the legal system in place within their company to find reasons to let someone go, that may not be obvious that it is being done because of the disability and or Transgender issue

For someone who is disable, on the spectrum,... more »

Extend support for those unable to drive

In my community of Rochester, NY the local RTS bus service provides rides for those with disabilities. However, they will only pick up at home addresses less than two miles from their nearest bus stop. This rule keeps people like my daughter from accessing services unless they move. The small buses they use for the service don't even stop at the bus stops. Transportation is a huge dealbreaker for many disabled people.... more »

Information regarding working while on benefits trending idea

Many of my clients are on government benefits of some kind (SNAP, SSI, SSDI), but many do not know how working will affect their benefits. Many assume they will lose their benefits if they start working and will not get them back. If they had some information about that when they got on benefits that told them how working would specifically affect their benefits, more people might be less afraid to look for work. I feel... more »

Helping employees with mental disorders

As someone who has ADHD and a graduate degree in professional counseling with counseling internship experience, I have learned that many mental disorders also accompany other disorders. In my case, it is anxiety and depression. What I have learned is that there is a great stigma when it comes to mental disabilities. I actually hate the word disability because the prefix states what one cannot do. I see ADHD more as that... more »

Discrimination, Affirmative Action & Advanced Telecommunications

Advanced telecommunications systems like Zoom, Jabber and MS Teams that are inaccessible to the deaf, hard of hearing and other people with disabilities can lead to significant barriers in the workplace. Quality Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) captions should be a built-in part of these products, just as cameras and microphones are, to provide equal employment opportunities for everyone. Withholding this critical component... more »

Tools/Training: Advocating for One's Self/Disability Identity

Many people do not know how to ask for help when it come to their disability needs. They might be afraid to ask, they might not even know they can ask or what to ask for, or they don't know how to ask because they never had to when they were in grade school - and some don't know their rights. Having had a disability my whole life, I didn't really need to think about it when in grade school because the state had to make... more »

Employment for Disabled

Losing medical care is a large part of why disabled workers are afraid to work. The cost of medical care and the fear of begining the process again to get SSI/SSDI keeps lots of folks unemployed. Disabled workers should be helped to get and retain at least part time employment without the fear of losing these needed services and money.

A suggestion is that the Federal Govement has many jobs that a disabled worker... more »

Job coaching

I agree with those who have said that it's crucial to continue working with a disabled individual after they have landed the job, to make sure that they understand what's expected of them and have someone who can help them when they face challenges.

Also, disabled people want jobs that relate to their skills and interests, not just any old job that happens to be available. If a person is going to be successful in a job... more »

VETS and disabled veterans should be included in this initiative

It's important to include VETS along with OFCCP, ODEP, and the Women's Bureau in this process to ensure disabled veterans are fully included in and benefit from this important initiative. The intersection of EO 11246, Section 503, and VEVRAA is key to ensuring all underserved communities are included.

Community Inclusion

Massive community education is essential, community businesses and individuals in those communities should should have a means to bridge the huge gap. Most employers are not even aware of the talent available to them. Most employers have no idea how to even support these individuals while on the job, they are worried about appearances, behaviors and liability, ect..

Fortunately, every individual with a disability waiver... more »
