Holding Large Employers Accountable

Unlike race or sex discrimination, being discriminated against because you are disabled, especially an unseen disability, is not something that gets people, like lawyers, excited. These aren't class action lawsuits, they are generally one off, because each disability affects everyone differently. Therefor there must be a more robust effort from the Federal Gov't to assist people who are disabled from discrimination.... more »

Educational assistance to lift employment in k-12 w/disab's

As a 40-year simultaneous special education teacher/researcher, I would suggest these five interlocking steps, at the intersection of preparatory education and employment, especially for our youth with disabilities:

Federal Reasonable Accommodation Process

The federal reasonable accommodation process is broken and ineffective. The Rehabilitation Act of 1973 ("Rehab Act") does not provide federal employees the exact same protections as the ADA. The EEOC needs to be properly staffed to take over the process or bring in an external third party in order to guarantee employees equal treatment under the law.

Yes, we can help you meet your goals

Yes, we have the candidates you are looking for!

Partnership among service providers and systems needs to be enhanced. Outcomes based payment structures are essential but unintended consequences are competition among vocational providers for placements which does not always serve employers. Job development collaboratives or one portal models to enhance our ability to meet employer recruitment needs is essential.

"We can't find staff"-Partner with AJCs

Service providers in rural areas struggle to find staff. Many providers, regardless of location, struggle to keep staff because of low wages. Successful partnerships can be made with American Job Centers who can provide training to job seekers and candidate referrals to providers. Career pathways in social services can be highlighted to highlight upward mobility.

Getting to Work

To truly serve rural communities affordable transportation needs to be addressed and reliance upon internet communication is not feasible. Some areas have partnered with employers to develop shuttles, car pools or expanded public transportation bus routes to help employees commute.

RE: Working Together to Successfully Accommodate Workers

From my experience as a HR Professional in ADA Compliance, some of the reasons that their is so much conflict and misunderstanding around ADA Workplace accommodations is that both the employer and employee do not understand the accommodation process or what each others rights and responsibilities are under the ADA. Because of the lack of education in Title 1 of the ADA, there is a lot of fear and mistrust. The more I... more »
